The challenge of up-sales is becoming increasingly harder as a result of industry moves towards poster advertising. Research by Poulter Partners’ Leeds based ‘Drink Tank’ team has uncovered that customers are failing to be drawn to posters - becoming lost in the ‘noise’ of the pub and blend into the background. The research showed however that customers recognize hand written or illustrated pub chalkboards as being the most effective at caling for their attention - they are more likely as a result to pause and take in the information before ordering.

PUB MARKETING HOT-SPOTS!

1 A-BOARDS
Focused messages with clear chalkboard writing and art will catch the eye of most passing traffic.

2 INTERIOR CHALKBOARDS
Preferably at eye level with tidy chalkboard art, they do more for sales than wall mirrors!

3 EXTERNAL WALLS
While not as effective as A-boards it still provides for a good ‘hook’. Though remember that Chalkboard art is more effective at grabbing attention than printed signage.

4 BACK BAR & COUNTER
let your back bar work for you while customers are waiting for drinks. A small bar top chalkboard with some neat writing will aid in upselling.

5 TABLE MENUS/TENT CARDS
Especially effective for driving up-sales and food/drink pairings.

6 TOILET WALLS
An often overlooked but premium ‘distraction free’ advertising space.

7 ABOVE THE BAR
Sometimes overlooked by designers, above the bar is a great place for chalkboard art, particularly with regard to forthcoming events andpromotions. Everyone looks toward the bar.

8 FOYER/ENTRANCE
A great spot for giving reasons to return! But keep it simple - you don't want people hanging around too long!

9 LOCAL PRESS
Targeted marketing campaigns can encourage increased trade on quiet nights.

10 FACEBOOK
Massively untapped so get ahead of your competition while it's hot!

Artwork for ShortList Magazine

ShortList, the nationally distributed lifestyle magazine for men, recently ran an article based around the traditionsl British Roast. To acompany the article I produced a full page illustration incorporating prescribed text.

The style is similar to my pub chalkboard illustrations and was produced large (A1) and printed full page (Oversized A4)

For those wishing to start up their own chalkboard writing business:

Unfortunately there is simply no time to reply to those seeking advice. I currently receive around a dozen enquiries per week regarding this!

Some time ago, I did spend many hours replying to such enquiries but without a single 'thank you' email returned. I am sure you will understand just how limited my time is.

The only advice I should repeat here is 'stay legal'; develop your own unique style and be original.

Legal action is currently being undertaken regarding other chalkboard writers imitating (passing off) my trademarked style and chalkboard designs (which are all protected under copyright law).
